How to Apply for FREE Nonprofit Google Workspace Services

In this article, we'll review how nonprofits can apply for the free Google Workspace offering. To review the benefits for this program, please see our Nonprofit Tech Toolkit.

🏁 Prerequisites

  • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, and the Letter of Exemption from the IRS. We'll need to upload this with the application. See all eligibility requirements here.

  • The organization’s physical address

  • The organization’s online contact information

  • (Optional) It helps expedite the application review if you have a verified TechSoup account, but it is not required.

Application Steps

  • Sign in with your Google account here: https://www.google.com/nonprofits/account/orgs

  • Click New Request

  • Fill out each page of the form and upload the Letter of Exemption from the IRS when prompted. If you already have a verified TechSoup account, you can link it during this application process.

  • After completing all the steps in the application, you'll have to wait to get approved. It can take anywhere from 1 day to 14 days for Google to review applications. If you're not approved, you may need to provide additional documentation.

👀 Checking Your Application Status

You can always check the status of your nonprofit application in the Google Nonprofit Portal.

💵 If you've already been paying for Google Workspace and need to move to free nonprofit licensing:

  • You cannot convert directly from Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, and Enterprise plans. You must downgrade all users to the Starter or trial plan to upgrade to the nonprofit licensing.

  • After you've confirmed that you've been verified via google.com/nonprofits (instructions above), submit the following form to complete the licensing conversion: https://support.google.com/nonprofits/contact/contact_us

  • Fill out all the fields, and in the issue or question field, type:

    • Please convert all our licenses to Google for Nonprofit. We are already approved via the Nonprofit portal. Please let me know if you need any more information.

➡️ Next Steps - Configuring Google Workspace
